Parkview, Health Department and Schools Partner on Flu Mist Clinics

(Thursday, November 18, 2010) – Nurses from Parkview Hospital today visited Maplewood Elementary School to give seasonal flu mist vaccinations to students. Parkview is partnering with the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health and local schools to vaccinate as many children as possible.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to have their child receive the seasonal flu vaccination. Several clinics have been this month. More than 5,000 students have been vaccinated this year.

“We are pleased to be working together with the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health and local schools to ensure that children are receiving necessary vaccinations,” said Connie Kerrigan, manager of community nursing, Parkview Hospital. “Parkview’s mission is to improve the health of the communities we serve. This outreach effort benefits children and helps them be as healthy as possible.”

“We appreciate Parkview’s dedication to keeping our children healthy,” said Mary Hess, FWCS Health Services Specialist. “Each day a student is out of school because of illness is a loss of valuable education time. Offering flu mist in our schools provides protection from one illness that could take students away from their studies.”

“We are very pleased to work with Parkview Health and Fort Wayne Community Schools on another important public-private health initiative,” said Dr. Deborah McMahan, Allen County Health Commissioner. “Studies have shown that schools are often ground zero for flu outbreaks. The more children we can immunize, the less flu transmission we are likely to have in our community. And that’s good for all of us.”

Parents of students who do not attend any of the participating schools but are interested in having their child vaccinated should contact their health care provider or the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health for vaccination opportunities.
