Governor announces leadership change at FSSA
(INDIANAPOLIS, November 9, 2010) – Governor Mitch Daniels has accepted the resignation of Family and Social Services Administration Secretary Anne Murphy, who is returning to the private sector, and has named FSSA Chief of Staff Michael Gargano as the agency’s new secretary.
“Secretary Murphy guided FSSA during challenging times. She’s led implementation of our new hybrid welfare system that is serving Hoosiers well and has found ways to serve more Hoosiers during this national economic downturn,” said Daniels.
Among Secretary Murphy’s accomplishments, she:
- Transitioned the state’s welfare modernization system to a new hybrid system that has increased the accuracy of determining eligibility and reduced wait times and case backlogs.
- Provided services to over 1.2 million Hoosiers, a 10 percent increase over the past year.
- Presided over the largest increase in home and community based services for Hoosier seniors in the state’s history.
Murphy earned her bachelor’s degree and law degree from Indiana University. She worked for nine years at the Health and Hospital Corporation in Marion County, first as general counsel and later as vice president and chief operating officer. In 2005 she joined FSSA as chief of staff, and in December of 2008, Daniels appointed her as secretary of the agency.
Gargano earned his bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business from Kent State University. Before joining FSSA as chief of staff in 2009, he was a director at KPMG LLP Indianapolis, a global tax, auditing and advisory firm. He previously was president of the Watertown Group and a director at Covansys Corporation.
The leadership change will take effect on Nov. 15.
