Get the Picture at the Next “Lunch with an IPFW Scientist” Session
(November 1, 2010) – Learn about the history and chemistry behind early photographic processes at the next Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist session. Michael Columbia, associate professor of chemistry at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), will discuss “The Chemistry of Alternative Photography” Saturday, Nov. 13, at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The program is open to the public at a cost of $16 per person; $10 for Science Central members. Lunch is included.
Although chemical (classical) photography is increasingly being replaced by digital photography, the technology of alternative photographic processes has been used for more than 180 years. Photographers from the 19th and 20th centuries pioneered most of the techniques that are now considered “alternative.” Participants will use one of these alternative processes – that of cyanotypy (blueprint photography) – to develop their own photographs.
The Science Central Lunch with an IPFW Scientist Series is designed for families with young people 8 and up and plants in both the young and most seasoned participant a budding interest in science. After each presentation, which includes a hands-on activity, participants enjoy lunch with the presenter. Advance reservations are required, and families with young people ages 8-14 are welcome.
