IPFW Invites Green Community to Participate in Renovation Plans for Helmke Library
(September 20, 2010) – On Oct. 1, 2010, Indiana University-Purdue University (IPFW) senior students in the Construction Engineering Technology B.S. degree program, together with members of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the regional U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the Northeast Indiana Green Build Coalition (NEIGBC) will be conducting a design charrette focusing on IPFW Helmke Library renovations. The session will be held on the second floor of Helmke Library and will run from 8 a.m. to noon. It is open to IPFW faculty, staff, and students, as well as any interested individual or ecology related business in the community. Members of the media are welcome to attend.
The purpose of the design charrette is to review the library building and site to discover what it would take to bring it to a LEED-EB® Platinum level. LEED-EB® is the existing-building aspect of the USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building criteria. The charrette brainstorming will focus on the ecology of the existing landscaping to address storm water issues; alternative energy efficient HVAC systems to address the inefficiency of the existing system; plumbing fixtures and system to address water use inefficiency; electrical system to address both the need to upgrade to more efficient fixtures and to meet an increased demand for power and network computing in the future IPFW Learning Commons; and space design to address the interactive complexity of use in this new facility on the second floor of the library.
