Parkview providing vision testing outreach
(September 29, 2010) – Parkview Hospital is increasing access to vision testing for area children. Nurses from Parkview Hospital today visited Lindley Elementary School to conduct vision tests for students.
Parkview uses a PediaVision® mobile system, which is computerized technology that offers more advanced screenings. The system uses a hand-held infrared camera that takes a digital photo of the eye in only a few seconds. The screening can be done on children as young as six months and can test for six different vision problems such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness and astigmatism.
The screening process has also helped Parkview provide successful vision screenings to children with language barriers and special needs. In addition, the program stresses the importance of good vision and why screenings are necessary.
The PediaVision® system was purchased in 2008 in conjunction with the Shoaff Park Lions Club. More than 4,600 students in Fort Wayne and Allen County have been tested to date this year. Parkview expects to test 7,500 children during this year’s program.
