Stafford Represents Fort Wayne at National Economic Development Conference
(September 20, 2010) – John Stafford, director of the Community Research Center at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), was a presenter at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s conference on Economic Development in Underserved Communities: Where Research and Practice Meet, earlier this month. He joined two economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston on a panel discussing the economic trends of mid-sized Midwest and Northeast cities and factors which allowed some to experience greater economic resurgence than others. Stafford presented the economic ups and downs of the Fort Wayne metropolitan area over the past thirty years and highlighted actions that have led to economic opportunities and discussed continuing economic challenges.
“The two day conference provided a tremendous opportunity to gain greater understanding of programs and activities other communities are undertaking to restore economic prosperity—particularly in areas across the United States that have suffered the most from fundamental economic changes,” Stafford reported. Various panels covered activities ranging from entrepreneurial support, to workforce/educational advancement, to business retention and attraction.
The Community Research Institute at IPFW has been tracking and analyzing economic, workforce, and demographic trends in northeast Indiana for the past 25-plus years and serves in a supporting capacity to many of the region’s economic development organizations. Prior to becoming the Institute’s director in 2003, John Stafford served as a planner and public administrator with the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County since the mid-1970s.
