Press release from Lutheran Hospital:
Lutheran Celebrates 25 Years of Transplant Care
Special reception for recipients and team members set for Tuesday
(August 30, 2010) – A gathering 25 years in the making will take place at Lutheran Hospital Tuesday, Aug. 31, from 6-7:30 p.m., in the south lobby. Heart transplant recipients and their families, as well as physicians and team members, have been invited to Lutheran for a reception honoring hundreds of transplant patients and celebrating thousands of memories.
Since 1985, 266 patients have received a heart transplant at Lutheran Hospital. Transplant team members, including several of the program’s pioneers, are scheduled to be in attendance as the hospital salutes all who have helped make this remarkable milestone a reality.
“Seeing our transplant patients during follow-up visits or out in the community is an ongoing reminder of the important care we’ve provided to those who might otherwise need to leave the region for help,” said Joe Dorko, interim CEO, Lutheran Health Network. “The past quarter-century of heart transplants at Lutheran would not have been possible without trailblazing caregivers and remarkable patients who inspire us all.”
Of the approximately 5,000 hospitals in the country, 240 have transplant centers and only 123 of those perform heart transplants. Lutheran Hospital offers the region’s only heart and kidney transplant programs.
