City’s weed enforcement starts Monday
Residents can report violations to 311, City website(April 30, 2010) – To keep neighborhoods healthy and vital, the City of Fort Wayne’s Neighborhood Code Enforcement department will start enforcing weed and tall-grass violations Monday, May 3. The department will also begin accepting weed complaints from the public on the same day.
The weed violation process includes the posting of a notice in the cited yard plus a letter sent by the City to the owner of record. Property owners then have five days to correct the violation. If the grass or weeds are not removed after that time, the City’s mowing contractor will cut the lawn, and the owner will be charged.
Grass must be at 9 inches tall to be in violation of the City’s ordinance.
This year, the City has six seasonal, part-time employees dedicated to weed violations. They inspect complaints and proactively identify violations. Five days after the initial posting, the mowing contractors check if property owners are in compliance and if not, mow the yard and take date-stamped before and after photos.
“A well-maintained property is a sign of a healthy neighborhood,” said Mayor Henry. “We count on our owners to do their part. But when the need is there, the City’s weed enforcement program plays an important role in protecting property values and keeping Fort Wayne an attractive and vibrant city.”
