CANI Head Start sites to host activities

(March 29, 2010) In conjunction with the Week of the Young Child (April 19-23), CANI Head Start’s sites will host programs focusing on the needs of young children and families.

The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the world’s largest early childhood education association, with nearly 100,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state, and regional Affiliates. The purpose of the Week of the Young Child is to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.

NAEYC first established the Week of the Young Child in 1971, recognizing that the early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children’s success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child is a time to plan how we?as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation?will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

CANI Head Start is a free, comprehensive development program. It meets educational, health, nutritional, and social service needs of low-income preschool children, ages 3 to5, and their families in Allen, Noble, and Whitley counties.

Week-long activities are planned at CANI’s nine Head Start sites in Allen, Noble and Whitley counties. The itinerary includes pajama day, music activities, field trips story time, a tea party and parent-child activities. Media are welcome to attend. Schedule of events:

Whitley County:

• Celebrating by highlighting some of the favorite books they’ve read during the course of the year. Authors include Dr. Seuss (Green Eggs and Ham), Eric Carle (The Tiny Seed), Bill Martin Jr. (Chicka Chicka Boom Boom) and Lois Ehlert (Fish Eyes). An example of an activity: for Dr. Seuss, they will be making green eggs and ham, they’ll create a tasting graph and everyone will wear green – everything in the Art Area will be green that day too.
• On the evening of April 21st, families are invited for a Night at the Museum event which will highlight the Picturing America curriculum. Parents and children will have the opportunity to create their own masterpiece and visit while enjoying light snacks.
• Art Fair

St. Henry’s:

• Monday – Hat Day
• Tuesday – Color Day – Red, white, or blue. Mr. Junior Crawford will be bringing animals to the site.
• Wednesday – Grand Person Day and Art and Learning Fair
• Thursday – Fire Truck; Police Car

Salvation Army:

• Monday — African drums
• Tuesday – St. Jude’s Trike-a-Thon; Purple Day; community volunteers will go to the site to read to the children
• Wednesday – Visit from the “Library Lady”
• Thursday – Bring your parent to school day (parents who stay 3.5 hours will be served breakfast or lunch); Earth Day – children will plan flowers
• Art Fair

Ivy Tech:

• Wednesday – Philharmonic presentation
• Thursday – Field Trip
• Friday – Parent/Child Activity Night (games, activities; examples: Bingo, Memory, fine and gross motor activities)
• Art Fair

Ligonier:

• Monday – Pajama Day and Teddy Bear Day
• Tuesday – Hat Day
• Wednesday – Field Trip
• Thursday – “Show and Tell;” Bring a Special Person to Lunch Day; Parent Meeting
• Art Fair

Temple:

• Monday – Father and Child Hand Prints
• Tuesday – Picture Day with Lisa Conrad
• Wednesday – On-site Field Trip – How Donuts are Made
• Thursday – Art and Learning Fair

Grace-St. John’s:

• Popcorn sales all week — $ .25/bag; Cookie sale on Thursday – 2/$1.00
• Monday – Visit from Fort Wayne Police Dept., and Sock Hop
• Tuesday — Visit from Fort Wayne Fire Dept.; Spring School Pictures
• Wednesday – Fire Chief Dave Medals from Safety Village and his Dog; Lowe’s Male Involvement Day – building project for dads and children
• Thursday – Bring Your Bike to School Day; Literacy Day/Story Telling with Truman the Literacy Dinosaur and Book Give-Away

Hanna-Creighton:

• Monday – Make music, make quilts, read to children, Fort Wayne Mayor visit, Early Literacy
• Tuesday – Grandparents Day, Retro Day for Staff, read to children; Early Literacy
• Wednesday – Art Fair, Moon Walk, read to children, Early Literacy
• Thursday – Favorite snacks, Ice Cream Social, read to children, Pajama Day for children
• Friday – Read to children; Early Literacy
• Saturday – Tea Party

Kendallville:

• Monday – Women’s Day, Crazy Hair Day; the children will plant flowers outside in the courtyard
• Tuesday – Men’s Day, Funny Hat Day; Exotic Aquatics will conduct a presentation at the site
• Wednesday – Grandparent’s Day, Wacky Wednesday; children will be making key chains that include their photos
• Thursday – Field trip to Classic Café
• Art Fair
