City Offers Neuter for a Nickel Program

Animal Care & Control is offering for the third year, a special event called Neuter for a Nickel as part of the 16th annual Spay Day USA celebrated by humane organizations nationwide during the month of February.

Neuter for a Nickel offers Allen County residents the opportunity to schedule male cat neuter surgeries for up to seven male cats per household for just five cents per cat. The event will be held at Animal Care & Control, 3020 Hillegas Road on February 13 & 14 with surgeries provided by volunteer veterinarians. Allen County residents must call 427-1244 (option 7) for an appointment prior to the event. Neuter surgeries will be provided on a first come bases.

The event is made possible through private donations to help the shelter prevent as many unwanted spring litters as possible. Last year Animal Care & Control handled 8,580 cats and kittens, while only 172 of them were ever claimed by their owners; 869 were adopted.

“We want cat owners in our community to spay or neuter their cats at the earliest possible age. Uncontrolled cat breeding is unacceptable when there are so many options to prevent it,” stated spokesperson Peggy A. Bender.

Only male cats will be served by the program to account for the volume expected during the two day event. To schedule an appointment or to make a donation, call 427-1244.
