Fresh Holsum Bread to feed hungry

Press release from the Community Harvest Food Bank:

Fresh Holsum Bread to feed hungry

Some consider it comfort food and right now during the holidays many who are struggling in northeast Indiana could use something to comfort them. So Holsum Bakery in Fort Wayne, a division of Lewis Bakeries, is donating another 2,000 loaves of fresh Holsum Sof-Twist bread to Community Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Indiana following a similar donation in November.

A number of years ago the Holsum Bakery in Fort Wayne decided to close their thrift stores and donate any surplus bread to Community Harvest Food Bank. On average, Community Harvest receives 5,800 pounds of bakery items from the bakery each week. However, in November, Wayne Davidson, President, Holsum Bakery Fort Wayne Division heard that Community Harvest had seen a 60% increase in need in the last 18 months and decided to increase its donations over the holidays to help.

“The intent is to help us keep up,” said Jane Avery, Community Harvest executive director. “Holsum Bakery has been affected by the economy just like everyone else but less so than others and they want to help their neighbors in need. This is a truly meaningful way that they can. They already donate a significant amount of bread and bakery items each week and this is a welcome addition. We are so grateful.”

According to Davidson, they are happy to help. “We wanted to do more aside from the donations we give each week,” Davidson said. “We here at Holsum want to reach out and provide good nutritious food to those in our community who are in need.”
