Geological Survey Planned in Allen County Next Week
Work to impact travel along two County roads

The Indiana Geological Survey will be conducting a seismic reflection survey along several roads in Allen County next week in order to upgrade regional mapping of the surficial geology.

In the current phase, the Survey is targeting Cedar Canyons Road between Coldwater and Dunton Roads and Wallen Road between Huguenard and Flaugh Roads. The survey will be conducted beginning December 7, weather permitting.

The survey involves a suburban truck moving very slowly in one lane of traffic towing a 50-pound roller and a 50-foot string of geophones. The truck stops every 5 feet to strike the roller and take measurements when no traffic is going by. There will be several support vehicles on either side of the truck towing the instruments. There will also be signs and traffic control on the designated roads.

“The seismic reflection survey creates an image of sediment layers up to 120 feet below the ground surface,” according to Michael L. Prentice, Ph.D., with the Indiana Geological Survey. “This information is very useful for mapping subsurface sediment distribution.”

The Illinois State Geological Survey is cooperating in this survey and will be on site.
