Habitat for Humanity press release:
Indiana Michigan Power’s Energy Star Home for Habitat for Humanity is complete! Dedication to take place October 17, 2009
With support from Indiana Michigan Power (I&M), Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity has completed a new “Energy Star” home for Shameka Arrington and her son. This home, the third to be sponsored by I&M for Fort Wayne Habitat, will be dedicated on October 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. The home is located at 3917 Gretna Avenue in Fort Wayne. This is Fort Wayne Habitat’s 131 house built in the Fort Wayne area.
Homes earn the “Energy Star” rating by meeting guidelines for energy efficiency that are set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Some of the things that qualify a home are insulation that is properly installed and inspected, energy-efficient windows and lighting, as well as things you might not think of such as sealing holes and cracks when the house is being built to help reduce drafts, moisture and noise. The house has Energy Star rated appliances (provided by Whirlpool) a programmable thermostat and a high efficiency heat pump system for heating and air conditioning.
In addition to its financial gift to Habitat in support of the project, I&M provided numerous volunteers to construct the house.
I & M Vice President Allen Glassburn had this to say about the new home, “I&M is proud to be a part of the Habitat program. It’s important that we continue to make our community stronger and more responsive to the needs of those among us who need a helping hand. And since this will be an Energy Star home – meaning it will be 20-30 percent more efficient than a standard home – the new homeowners will be better able to manage their enegy costs.”
