Faith-Based Summit to take faith into action
INDIANAPOLIS, IN: Â The Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is partnering with the City of Fort Wayne, and Indiana Access to Recovery to sponsor, “Strengthening Our Communities: Taking Faith Into Action; a regional faith-based summit to be held on September 25, 2009 at the Public Safety Academy, located at 7602 Patriot Crossing in Fort Wayne Indiana, 46816, from 8:30am – 3:30pm. The summit will engage pastors, lay leaders, and faith and community-based organizations in a day of discussion and workshops designed to address current issues facing the faith community.
The event, designed to bring together participants from across the northern region of Indiana, will open with greetings from representatives from Governor Daniels office and area Congressmen. The guest speaker for the morning will be the Rev. Dr Harold D. Truer, an Associate Professor of Applied Theology at Howard University and president of GLOBE Community Ministries in Philadelphia. Dr. Trulear has over thirty years’ of pastoral and advocacy experience on behalf of youth and their families. He has also served as vice president of faith-based initiatives at Public/Private Ventures in Philadelphia, and as a dean at New York Theological Seminary.
The Office of the Mayor Tom Henry, will serve as host for the event in keeping with the Mayor’s commitment to engage the faith and grassroots communities. “I am honored that the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives is going to assist Fort Wayne and northern Indiana’s faith-based leaders in helping to transform their values into action in our community. Fort Wayne has a long tradition of people of faith from churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and agencies working to better the lives of residents. This free workshop will help them discover new opportunities while learning from one another,” Mayor Tom Henry said.
Participants in the morning will join facilitated panel discussions focused on topics to include; current faith-based state initiatives, capacity-building, security and disaster planning, and the Indiana Health and Faith Partnership. After a networking luncheon, a variety of focused workshops will be offered on topics important to the region. “It is with great enthusiasm that I join Mayor Tom Henry and other faith-based community leaders from Northern Indiana as we engage as equal and committed partners to transform our respective communities block by block, neighborhood by neighborhood, city by city because government does not have all the answers”, stated Isaac Randolph Jr., Executive Director of the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives.
The event is free to the public, but registration is strongly encouraged. Participants can register on-line. Cost for the networking luncheon is $10.00, to be paid on the day of the event.
