Press release from the TinCaps:
TinCaps Seek to ‘Hit 300′ with American Red Cross
Largest Community Blood Drive in Fort Wayne History Planned for Monday, August 3 at Parkview Field
Summer is a difficult time to collect blood. While many families are traveling, high school and colleges are out of session and regular blood donors often take a break from giving blood, the American Red Cross relies on businesses and the community to help ensure an adequate blood supply.
In recent days, the blood supply of type O-negative, the universal donor, has reached very low levels. While a three-day supply is considered adequate, type O-negative blood remains at less than a one-day supply. Also urgently needed are blood types A-negative and B-negative, both at a one-day supply. While all blood types are needed, these three are in particularly high demand.
The Fort Wayne TinCaps are “stepping up to the plate” on Monday to try to boost the local blood supply by hosting a special blood drive at Parkview Field. The largest recorded one-day community blood drive to date was held at the Red Cross in September of 2005 when 283 pints of blood were collected. The TinCaps plan to surpass that record and reach 300 donations.
The TinCaps blood drive will take place on Monday, Aug. 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Parkview Field in the Lincoln Financial Event Center, located on the right field concourse. Free parking for blood donors is available in the Silver Lot, located at the corner of Brackenridge and Ewing Streets across from the Main South Gate. Donors may also park in the Harrison Square Parking Garage for $2 per hour or use nearby metered parking for $0.25 per hour.
All presenting donors will receive a t-shirt, a ticket voucher for Monday night’s TinCaps game, and will be entered into a weekly regional drawing for a $500 Meijer gift card.
