Rant: Start your own blog…

A recent comment, for some reason, made me angry.

The commenter, who confused a comment on a blog with an “e-mail”, complained because I didn’t post a photograph of an interesting moment at the recent BBQ Ribfest.

I work extremely hard on this blog.  I have spent a lot of time building this blog into something people can turn to and find out what’s going on in our downtown.  Most of this work is  uncompensated which I do because I enjoy it.  Comments like this one, however, really make my blood boil.

I would like to point out that I do not have all the time in the world to hang around festivals and other events and capture every last interesting moment. I have to make a living; I have limited time and also a life outside blogging which means I do not hang out 24/7 at such things. If you’re so disappointed, where’s your blog? This would be a good opportunity for you to start one.

Think about this – for every 1 hour I spend at such an event, it means I spend 2-3 hours pulling photographs together, writing posts, uploading and the other items to get the finished product you see. I cannot be all things to all people and provide you with everything you think should be featured.

I don’t mean to be confrontational here, but come on. I put am immense amount of time into this blog – which means I cover that which I find interesting and have the time to do.   If I can’t spend 24/7 at a festival and this disappoints you, then look for another blog – and frankly good luck with finding another Fort Wayne blog that covers the variety and depth of items I do.

  1. I’m just taking a wild guess here, but he’s maybe related to Mike Conley (who plays with Chris Dodd) and that was his kid, or nephew or some such.

You’re right in that people do not know the time and effort it takes to produce a blog, much less keep it up-to-date. You do a great job, don’t let this get you down.

    • Thanks guys! It didn’t so much get me down as made me mad. I mean come on.

After I re-read the comment, I had similar thoughts to Parson. But, it should be pretty apparent that this is not the official BBQ Ribfest website. I probably shouldn’t have ranted as quickly as I did, but I make no apologies.

The other thing is I did photograph G-Money early in their performance, but there were a lot of other things I wanted to photograph as well. Oh well, can’t please everyone!

  2. Hang in there Stephen!! Even when we disagree I really enjoy getting your opinion as you think before you blog which is better than I do…..Have you asked the person what his interest was??

    • I thought about it, Mark, but I haven’t. I almost suggested he send me a photo if he had taken one. I mean if it meant that much to him, then he should have one, right? But frankly, I haven’t had much time to mess with something like this. I’ve gots bigger fish a fryn’!

  3. I thouroughly enjoy your blog and have never posted a comment before. Since someone was a jerk, I thought I’d post and tell you THANK YOU. The Germanfest pictures you’ve posted are wonderful and the videos made me and my family so happy. That little girl that is constantly waving in the ’09 videos is my niece and that video is priceless to us!!!
So – I want to say Thank you for you blog, I enjoy looking at it daily.
    Abby

    • Why thank you very kindly, Abby! I appreciate your thoughtfulness in taking the time to comment. Also, if you’re interested and promised to be patient and keep after me, I could possibly get you a dvd copy of the video you enjoyed. I am going to have some of the footage from Germanfest transferred to DVD and it wouldn’t take much more to add this to the list. There might be a slight fee (I have to have this done as my equipment isn’t up to the task), but if you interested, give me a week or two and send me an email.

  4. Stephen,

You shall henceforth be known in the local blogosphere as the man who blatantly attempted to skew the public discourse away from that all important subject of – young men with air guitars. For those who truely wish to be informed on the matter, please visit http://www.usairguitar.com/

And remember, no one really expects you to be all things to everybody. They just want you to be all things to them.

    • Hi Phil! I appreciate your comment – and it was good to see your name on the comment list again!

I almost commented something to the effect of, “It wasn’t like he was actually playing any-thing,” but didn’t.

And thanks for reminding me of everybody’s expectations! lol

  5. Very odd comment by Mr. Conley. I enjoy your blog and find it very informative. Moreover, given the lack of advertising, it should be readily apparent to your readers that you blog for non-economic reasons and not as a profession.
