The October 2nd Journal Gazette, Art sale to illuminate bridge:

[…] Explaining a rendering of the illuminated bridge, architect Cory Miller said the LED down-lights will emit “a soft, mystic sort of glow,” highlighting the bridge’s arches and giving it a tunnel-like feel.

In addition to making the bridge safer for nighttime users, Al Moll, city parks director, said the illuminated bridge will give the early 20th-century steel and iron bridge a “big-city aesthetic.”

The project emerged after about three years of bouncing around “what-if’s and ideas,” according to Judi Wire, of Great Panes Glass Studio and the merchants group.

[…] The windows were painted during a May “paint party” at Jack and Johnny’s, Wire said.

[…] Wire, who said organizers hope the lighting project will be completed by next summer, said she believes people will be drawn to the bridge when it is illuminated.

Today on WANE-15:

[…] This weekend the group will auction off art to raise some of the money.  12 windows and one door will be auctioned off. All the items were painted by local artists, and all the money will go toward the bridge.

“We decided we really wanted to do a public art project, and then it just came hand in hand with the bridge lighting. We thought this was the perfect event to tie them together and make this a joint effort,” says WAM member Shawna Nicelley.”We’re going to start with the auction and then I think that’s going to give us the momentum to go out in the community and get some community support.”

It’s also just the beginning of the revitalization in the area.  A number of businesses are applying for grants from the city to spruce up the outside of some of the older buidings and improve things like parking and landscaping to give the area more of a neighborhood feel.

The group will auction off all the art on Sunday, Oct. 19th.  The fundraiser starts at three o’clock, right on the Old Wells Street Bridge.
