Jack Morris: Retirement of Tom Wyss

(September 12, 2013) – District 15 State Senate candidate Jack Morris (D-Fort Wayne) issued this statement upon learning of the announcement by State Senator Tom Wyss that he will not be seeking another term in office.

“Although I have announced I am a candidate for the State Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Wyss I have mixed emotions. The 2010 campaign contest between Tom and I was hard fought but, with the exception of one misunderstanding, we avoided the negative attacks all too common in politics. I respect the public service Tom has provided. In honoring Tom I would like to share two exchanges we have had since the 2010 election:

On one occasion I was in my office and was told that I had a call. I picked up the phone and then Tom identified himself and told me he was in the Statehouse and I would never guess with who. He then informed me he had my granddaughter there with her class from Huntertown. He then told me to look for an e-mail from him. Following a little more friendly conversation we said goodbye. I looked in my incoming e-mail and soon saw one from Tom. Opening the e-mail I found a picture of Tom with my granddaughter with the caption, “My next campaign manager.” Perhaps Tom’s retirement was prompted by the fact he has learned granddaughter will be supporting me in this next election.

The other occasion Tom and I communicated was after the Connecticut school tragedy. I sent out a prayer and included Tom. Shortly thereafter I received a very nice response from Tom thanking me for sending the prayer to him and he echoed the sentiments I had expressed.

I share these moments to honor Tom’s service and to recall a time when Tom began his service when elected officials in Indianapolis and Washington remembered they were there to serve including seeking bipartisan legislation and not just the ideas of one party. The reality is, our exchange is an example of who we, citizens of Indiana, really are; we really like each other and want to care for each other. If we could remember these moments perhaps we could return to the day when elected officials worked together for the best result for everyone and not just for one political party.

“Politics has become more focused upon attacking the other side. This leads only to stalemate with very little actually getting accomplished. Our elected officials and candidates owe the people more. We need to work through our differences and fight for results which are best for us all”, said Morris.
