News release from Fort Wayne City Councilman Geoff Paddock (D-5th):
Street dedication for Miss Virginia today
(July 17, 2015) – Fifth District Councilman Geoff Paddock will be joined by Debra Butler and other neighbors to dedicate a four block portion of Hanna Street for “Miss Virginia” Schrantz. The dedication will take place tomorrow, Saturday, July 18th at 2 PM at the corner of Lewis and Hanna Streets.
Paddock and Butler will both unveil the sign at the corner of Lewis and Hanna Streets and formally dedicate the “Miss Virginia” Schrantz Memorial Way tomorrow at 2 PM.
Virginia Schrantz was often referred to as the Mother Theresa of Fort Wayne. She opened her home and clothed and fed needy neighbors and many strangers. She was a selfless advocate for the poor, and she helped anyone who was in need.
“Miss Virginia,” as she was known throughout the community, was a caring individual who helped hundreds of people prior to her death in the 1998.
Debra Butler had approached Geoff Paddock to assist in having the Board of Public Works dedicate a four block portion of Lewis Street as the:
“MISS VIRGINIA” SHRANTZ MEMORIAL WAY. The city donated both signs.
The Miss Virginia Mission House at 1312 South Hanna Street (426-0176) continues to serve many underprivileged people as a legacy to Virginia Schrantz.
