Vipers Fourth Quarter Comeback Ends Mad Ants Streak

(December 28, 2013) – The Rio Grande Valley Vipers made an impressive fourth quarter comeback against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants to steal a 107-102 victory Saturday night at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Houston Rockets’ assignee Robert Covington was the star of the game for the Vipers, as he knocked in 27 big points for the visiting team.

The Mad Ants were in control throughout the game and pushed their lead to 16 points in the fourth quarter. But that is when the Mad Ants offense stagnated and the Vipers offense went to work. The Vipers chiseled the lead down to single digits off of a tough five foot runner from Covington and kept the heat on the home team. While the Mad Ants were unable to score a field goal for close to seven minutes of game action, the Vipers attack kept coming, and they went up six with 1:50 to go in the game when Kevin Parrom hit a deep three from the top of the key. The Ants were able to cut the lead to one of five quick points from Peyton Siva with 21.5 seconds left in the game, but Troy Daniels knocked down some critical free throws, and the Mad Ants were unable to get the basket they needed to push the game into overtime.

For the Vipers, Troy Daniels contributed 22 points, Kevin Parrom scored 13, and BJ Young scored 13 to support Covington’s 27.

The Mad Ants were led by Ron Howard and Peyton Siva’s 24 points, and Trey McKinney Jones added 16 points.
