Abraham Lincoln scholar and Pulitizer Prize winner to speak at McMurtry Lecture
(August 28, 2013) – Dr. James M. McPherson, a Civil War and Abraham Lincoln Scholar, will be the annual keynote speaker at the 2013 R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture. This year’s lecture will be held in the Lower Level Theater of the Allen County Public Library, 900 Library Plaza, on Tuesday September 10 at 7:00 PM. McPherson’s lecture is entitled, “Lincoln and the West.”
Dr. McPherson earned a PhD from Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of several books, including War on the Waters, For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War, Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief, This Mighty Scourge, Ordeal by Fire: the Civil War and Reconstruction, and What They Fought For, 1861-1865. He is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his book, Battle Cry of Freedom.
Dr. McPherson will also attend other events that afternoon including a dinner with supporters and board members of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana. He will then present the McMurtry Lecture at 7:00 PM in the Theater.
The annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture is presented by the Friends of the Lincoln Collection of Indiana and the Friends of the Allen County Public Library. This year’s sponsor of the lecture is the Lutheran Health Network. Admission into the lecture is free, and a post lecture reception will be held at the library.
