FWCS students celebrate Thanksgiving
Fort Wayne Community Schools students will celebrate Thanksgiving by learning about the holiday, enjoying their own Thanksgiving feasts and helping others in the community. For example, Kekionga Middle School worked with open Arms Ministries throughout the month to provide Thanksgiving baskets
for many of the school’s families. Below are some of the other events taking place before the two-day Thanksgiving break.Wednesday, Nov. 24
- Kindergarten students at Bunche Montessori will have a Thanksgiving feast for lunch at 11:15 a.m. Each student will bring in a portion of the meal with the turkey and dressing arriving from Bob Evans.
- Students at Indian Village Elementary, 33835 Wenonah Lane, will enjoy their annual Thanksgiving feast at 11:30 a.m. Students dress up for the day and a special meal is ordered. Lunch includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner roll, cranberry Jell-O and pumpkin crunch.
- At Maplewood Elementary School, 2200 Maplewood Road, students and staff will all sit down together from 11 a.m.-1 p.m, to celebrate the upcoming holiday with a Thanksgiving lunch complete with centerpieces, placemats and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Entertainment will be provided by the choir and several classes giving Thanksgiving readings.
- Memorial Park Middle School, 2200 Maumee Ave., students and staff have been collecting food for Community Harvest Food Bank. The drive culminates in the school’s annual Thanksgiving assembly. This year, Mayor Tom Henry will be the keynote speaker, and the school’s musical groups will provide entertainment.
- At Nebraska Elementary School, 1525 Boone St., students and staff will join together to celebrate Nebraska Cub R.O.A.R. (Respect, Organization, Attitudes and Responsibility). Students will be showing respect for their friends and classmates in conversation; organization to pass around the food they share during their family-style Thanksgiving meal; attitudes of caring as they listen to others share what they are thankful; and responsibility to use manners during the meal. Nebraska classrooms have also been collecting cans and boxed goods for the Associated Churches Food Bank during the month of November. There will be a grade level competition held to see which grade can collect the most items to share with those in need.
- Northwood Middle School, 1201 E. Washington Center Road, will celebrate the end Aunt Elena’s Hair Care Challenge with a school-wide concert from 1:20 to 2:35 p.m., featuring music and videos written and produced by students. During the concert the grand total raised will be revealed, and Mr. Robert’s new hair do will be shown to the whole school. Money raised this year will go toward purchasing a Thereplay for Holland Elementary School.
