and finally, in 1987, the entire month of March was declared National Women\u2019s History Month when Congress passed Public Law 100-9.<\/p>\n<p>Purdue University Fort Wayne is proud to be celebrating this year\u2019s Women\u2019s History Month with the theme \u201cWomen Refusing to be Silenced,\u201d which comes from the national theme, \u201cValiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen\u2019s History Month is not only an opportunity for reflecting upon and celebrating women\u2019s accomplishments,\u201d said Janet Badia, Ph.D., director of the university\u2019s Women\u2019s Studies program. \u201cIt\u2019s also a political gesture: the very existence of the month asks us to consider the construction of history\u2014for example, who has written it and who has been written out of it\u2014and why it\u2019s even necessary to designate a special month to women\u2019s history, lives, and experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MarTeze Hammonds, Ed.D., Purdue Fort Wayne\u2019s chief diversity officer, believes the university&#8217;s observance of Women&#8217;s History Month helps many better realize the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we become more culturally competent, learning about the many different cultures that make up this great society, we can become more culturally confident in taking actions to mitigate and eliminate unconscious biases and systemic barriers that preclude equity for all,&#8221; Hammonds said. &#8220;Women\u2019s History Month is a time to LEARN about the many contributions of women, to GROW our individual selves, and to ACT through intentional work that leads to closing gaps, providing access, and celebrating the success of women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the student outreach coordinator with the Center for Women and Returning Adults, Cicelle Beemon has led the charge to offer a variety of events throughout March dedicated to understanding women\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal in celebrating Women&#8217;s History Month is to uplift the voices of the women from our past and present and to empower everyone, from all walks of life, to use their voices to create a better future,\u201d said Beemon.<\/p>\n<p>Those who attend the events will learn about the intersectionality of women and Blackness; dive into the world of women and writing; explore the meaning and shattering of the glass ceiling; and enjoy a screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary film RGB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s History Month 2021 Events<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>All activities are free and open to both the campus and the community<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 1: Women in the Workplace with MedPro<\/strong><br \/>\nTime: noon<br \/>\nLocation: Zoom<br \/>\nRSVP: Register on Handshake<br \/>\nDescription: An online forum, sponsored by the Career Development Center, the Doermer School of Business, and Med Pro.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 3: Women&#8217;s Professional Development Day<\/strong><br \/>\nTime: noon\u20134 p.m.<br \/>\nLocation: Zoom<br \/>\nRSVP: Register on Handshake<br \/>\nDescription: Join event sponsor, the Doermer School of Business, for a series of workshops for all genders on how to promote and educate women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 15: Women and Imposter Syndrome in Higher Education<\/strong><br \/>\nTime: 5\u20136:30 p.m.<br \/>\nEvent Access: WebEx;
