Notes from the Fort Wayne City Council Budget Hearing on October 8, 2009.<\/p>\n

This post covers notes from the Parks and Recreation budget discussion. The Parks and Recreation budget\u00c2\u00a0may be downloaded here.<\/p>\n

Parks and Recreation Director Al Moll is presenting his budget.<\/p>\n

They are preparing to take over the Dimension Ford Property – need to have it funded first. \u00c2\u00a0Will plant grass and that’s about it until money becomes available. \u00c2\u00a0Redevelopment Commission has helped with it. \u00c2\u00a0Will make a small improvement to the road that runs through it. \u00c2\u00a0The old railroad bed will be used for a connection to the Rivergreenway.<\/p>\n

Trying to unload some of the property that is not used for park purposes.<\/p>\n

Changes and Concerns slide makes no mention of the Headwaters Park issue.<\/p>\n

Parks PIO is also responsible for getting support for the projects and also relationships with sponsorship donors. \u00c2\u00a0“We have to get private donors and grants.” \u00c2\u00a0– Al Moll<\/p>\n

He is talking about Headwaters issue. \u00c2\u00a0They are looking at the \u00c2\u00a0issue.<\/p>\n

Marty is asking where Zoo comes in at. \u00c2\u00a0Parks owns the land, $5 million operation, 95% self-sustaining. \u00c2\u00a0Parks does provide landscaping. \u00c2\u00a0It’s a very minute part (taxpayer’s money) that goes into the Zoo.<\/p>\n

Mitch Harper – Competition between splash pads and swimming pools and elimination of one. \u00c2\u00a0Northside is used the most. \u00c2\u00a0 McMillen is used for sports academy. \u00c2\u00a0Memorial allows for free swimming due to close proximity of splash pad. \u00c2\u00a0Closed down Swinney to address some drop in available funds. \u00c2\u00a0Keep it closed next year, see how the public reacts. \u00c2\u00a0Splash pads require some additional funds, not like a swimming pool. \u00c2\u00a0Youth Centers and pools are low on the scales of available services.<\/p>\n

to operate a splash pad, anywhere from $12 to 15,000. \u00c2\u00a0Swinney cost $75,000. \u00c2\u00a0Costs about $100,000 to build a splash pad.<\/p>\n

John Shoaff – it’s not a subsidy rather a contribution. \u00c2\u00a0Asking to clarify if they’ll be doing away with Headwaters Park Alliance. \u00c2\u00a0It is alarming and I’ve heard the same comments.<\/p>\n

Karen Goldner – first year of improvements at Shoaff Park – it is fantastic compared to five years ago.<\/p>\n

Liz Brown – concerned about loss of CEDIT dollars? \u00c2\u00a0Al – more than concerned.<\/p>\n

Mitch Harper – asking about notices line. \u00c2\u00a0It’s for legal notices and advertising. \u00c2\u00a0They have forged a partnership with Fort Wayne Newspapers for printing and distribution. \u00c2\u00a0Costs about $80,000 per quarter.<\/p>\n

Al – looking at naming rights for facilities. \u00c2\u00a0Indiana Michigan pays $12,000 to sponsor the quarterly brochures.<\/p>\n

Marty – asking about why they aren’t included with the rest of the city in vehicle repairs – because of the variety of equipment used.<\/p>\n
