TinCaps Walk Off For Second Time In 24 Hours<\/strong><\/p>\n

(July 31, 2016) – For the second time in less than 24 hours, the TinCaps walked off against the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) at Parkview Field on Sunday afternoon. This time it was left fielder Tyler Selesky’s RBI infield single in the bottom of the ninth that scored third baseman Carlos Belen from third for a 3-2 Fort Wayne victory.<\/p>\n

On Saturday night, it was a 15th-inning walk-off triple from Belen that brought the ballpark to a frenzy. The TinCaps (15-21, 51-55) now have won five consecutive games, matching their longest winning streak of the season.
\nSelesky, a 22-year-old from Estero, Florida, was an unlikely candidate to be the star of the day. He went undrafted last month following a four-year career at Florida Gulf Coast, but was signed by the Padres on June 16. With Kodie Tidwell going on Fort Wayne’s disabled list last Sunday, Selesky was called up from the rookie-level Arizona League, where he was hitting .299.<\/p>\n

In his first week with the TinCaps, Selesky continued to make the most of his opportunities. The left-handed batter was 11-for-24 going into his at-bat against lefty Kirby Snead (L, 0-1), a former Florida Gator who Toronto took in the 10th round in June.<\/p>\n

The score was even, 2-2, after designated hitter Brad Zunica had just hit a game-tying sacrifice fly to right field that brought in shortstop Ruddy Giron, who led the inning off with a single. Belen went to third as the throw went to the plate. Belen had singled as well, moving Giron up to second. Both runners advanced a base when first baseman Nick Vilter laid down a successful sacrifice bunt.<\/p>\n

Selesky sent an 0-1 pitch on the ground to second, where John La Prise, a Virginia alum, bobbled it. Moments later, Selesky’s red jersey was covered in white baby powder.<\/p>\n

It was quite a quick reversal of emotions on both sides. Fort Wayne had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on a sac fly from Belen. Thanks to exemplary pitching from Anderson Espinoza the TinCaps lead stayed in tact for a while. The 18-year-old, top-ranked Padres prospect tossed five scoreless innings, as he limited Lansing (18-18, 54-52) to three hits and two walks, while striking out four.<\/p>\n

After Espinoza, Jesse Scholtens, who was just added to Fort Wayne’s roster Sunday morning, pitched the next three frames. He hung a 0 for 2 2\/3 before the Lugnuts got on the board in the eighth with an RBI double by La Prise that leveled the game, 1-1. Lansing leapt ahead, 2-1, with a run in the ninth against David Bednar (W, 2-2).<\/p>\n

The TinCaps are 5-0 on their homestand with two games still to go against the Lugnuts.<\/p>\n
