Lure of Mexico at FWMoA opens January 30<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(January 28, 2016) – The Fort Wayne Museum of Art is pleased to present Lure of Mexico, an exhibit exploring the attraction many artists felt to Mexico from the 1920s-1940s. In the opening decades of the 20th century visual artists, composers, writers, filmmakers, and dancers from all over the world flocked to Mexico. This exhibition explores the extraordinary art created during this time period and the cross cultural influences. The exhibit is on display January 30 – April 17, 2016.<\/p>\n

Drawn from FWMoA’s permanent collection and augmented by works from public and private collections across the country, the exhibition will be anchored by portfolios by African American artists Elizabeth Catlett, Hale Woodruff, and photographer, Paul Strand as well as other works by John Taylor Arms, Thomas Hart Benton, and Ben Shahn. Other featured artists include, Tina Modotti, Jos\u00c3\u00a9 Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and Edward Weston.<\/p>\n

Lenders to the exhibition include the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Fort Worth, Texas; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Krannert Art Museum and Kinkead Pavilion, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, National Museum of Mexican Art, Paul Paletti Gallery, and private collectors.<\/p>\n

FWMoA is planning a Lure of Mexico Symposium February 20 featuring Dr. Gilberto Cardenas of the University of Notre Dame and Dr. Phoebe Wolfskill of Indiana University, scholars with significant research experience on the topic of a cultural exchange between American artists and the wonders of 1920s-40s Mexico. Join us for two speakers, lunch, and a guided tour of the Lure of Mexico exhibition. FWMoA Members: $20 \/ Non-Members: $25. General admission to see this exhibition at the museum is free for FWMoA members, $7 adults, $5 students and seniors 65+, and $20 for families. General admission is free for everyone on Thursdays 5-8pm. Veterans, active military personnel, and their families receive free general admission. FWMoA gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10-6pm, Thursdays 10-8pm, and Sundays 12-5pm.<\/p>\n
