IPFW Posts Enrollment Gains in Freshman, Graduate, and International Students<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
(September 16, 2015) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Enrollment statistics for the fall 2015 semester at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) showed growth in freshmen coming directly from high school, graduate students, and international students, along with an expected slight decline in undergraduate degree-seeking student enrollment.<\/p>\n
“I’m pleased with the rise of freshman enrollments directly from high school and with the increased number of credit hours they’re taking,” said Carl Drummond, vice chancellor for academic affairs and enrollment management. “We saw their energy during New Student Orientation. These students are excited about their future and see the value of an IPFW education.”<\/p>\n
Freshman enrollments for students directly from high school are up 4.7% to 1,584, compared to 1,513 in 2014. These new students are also taking more credit hours this year, up 7.5% over last year. For the first time ever, these students are taking more than 14 credit hours of courses on average, indicating that most of them are attending full time. This continues a decade-long trend of IPFW’s student body shifting to a traditional, full-time college experience.<\/p>\n
IPFW saw growth in the number of graduate students, up 3.5% to 559, and graduate credit hours, which were up 3.4% to 3,676. International student enrollment increased by almost 20%, growing to 259 students, up from 217 in 2014.
\n“Graduate education is important for Fort Wayne and all of northeast Indiana,” said Drummond. “Advanced degrees, such as the new Doctor of Nursing Practice program, IPFW’s first doctoral degree that launched this fall, meet needs in the community and in business.”<\/p>\n
Overall enrollment dipped slightly to 12,719 students, down 3.7% from 13,214 last year.<\/p>\n
“We anticipated the decline as part of the post-recessionary cycle that higher education is in and proactively planned for it in our budgeting,” Drummond said.<\/p>\n
Dual credit enrollment was essentially flat, growing to 3,323 students from 3,298 last year. Dual credit students attend high school classes, but receive college credit for their work. These students typically take only one or two classes per semester.<\/p>\n
