IPFW River Walk to be Featured in National “City Trees” Magazine<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
(July 10, 2015) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and the IPFW Native Trees of Indiana River Walk and website will be featured nationally in a series of articles in the Society of Municipal Arborists magazine City Trees. Recommendations to other arborists and photos of outstanding non-native campus trees will be highlighted in the summer editions, followed by native trees in the fall.<\/p>\n
The articles will include historical information and photos of the native tree walk, which is used as an outdoor classroom by students from elementary all the way through college, as well as a destination for leaf collections and nature lovers. Campus horticulturist Rich Weber will supply the information and coordinate the project.<\/p>\n
Weber, a graduate of the Purdue University Forestry Program, has been in the landscape\/grounds maintenance profession for over 40 years, 17 of them at IPFW. Responsible for almost 10,000 trees as well as the integrated pest management program, Weber has also taken on the responsibility of restoring both the campus river banks and the woodlands back to their native state by identifying and removing invasive\/non-native plant material.<\/p>\n
The IPFW Native Trees of Indiana River Walk is a 1.25 mile trail along the west edge of IPFW’s main campus, bordering the river. Beginning on the Rivergreenway and extending to the rear of the Visual Arts Building, it was constructed in 2007 and funded by grants from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ Forestry Division and the USDA Forest Service. That same year, the project was awarded the Indiana Urban Forest Council Outstanding Project of the Year.<\/p>\n
The river walk’s accompanying website, ipfw.edu\/native-trees, has additional background details about the walk, native plants, non-native invasive species, etc. Containing over 2,000 photos, this catalog has been used by organizations like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Dow AgriSciences, as well as Michigan State University, University of Illinois, Purdue University, University of Florida, and University of Cordoba (Spain), among others.<\/p>\n
