IPFW Receives Study Abroad Grant, Creates Six Scholarships<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(June 4, 2015) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d The Generation Study Abroad\u00c2\u00ae initiative of the Institute of International Education (IIE) selected Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) to receive scholarship funding for students to study overseas.<\/p>\n

Through the initiative, the Office of International Education will receive $7,500 to support new scholarships for study abroad. The university will match this funding to make a total of six student scholarship awards of $2,500 each. These six scholarships can be used for the cost of tuition, books, travel-related study, service-learning, or internships abroad between now and spring 2016.<\/p>\n

According to the IIE, less than 10 percent of American college students study abroad \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and few of those students are from underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n

“These funds will help students who would otherwise be unable or unlikely to study abroad and help them make the most of their experience,” said Meg Underwood, assistant director for international programs, Office of International Education. “We will target sophomores or juniors who have never been abroad and can link their program with an independent study that directly relates to their academic and career goals.”<\/p>\n

The six recipients of the Generation Study Abroad grant will complete reflections, research, and other assignments before, during, and after their international studies. These are designed to enhance their experience and bring their knowledge back to campus to help internationalize the IPFW curriculum. Students will work with faculty or staff to identify and participate in an approved program that gives them class credit along with the support and individualized attention to make their time abroad a success.<\/p>\n

Upon return, recipients of the Generation Study Abroad grant will present their independent study results to the campus community. They will also participate in a volunteer ambassador program, helping to recruit and prepare prospective students for overseas study.<\/p>\n

IIE selected 26 Generation Study Abroad commitment partner colleges and universities to receive its initial round of study abroad scholarships for their students.<\/p>\n

The goal of the IIE Generation Study Abroad Scholarships is to help make study abroad opportunities accessible to all students, especially those who are typically underrepresented in U.S. study abroad.<\/p>\n
