Dorothy Kittaka named 2015 Dedication Award Recipient, registration opens February 20<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(February 19, 2015) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Teacher, musician, and community activist Dorothy Kittaka is the 2015 Dedication Award honoree at Tapestry: A Day for You, sponsored by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Parkview Health. The announcement was made at a press conference on February 19 at the Holiday Inn at IPFW.<\/p>\n

“Ms. Kittaka exemplifies the image of a woman who has shown positive aspects in all areas of her life,” said Nancy Stewart, Dedication Committee member. “Her lifelong dedication to community arts makes her a role model for women throughout northeast Indiana and across the world.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 20<\/strong><\/p>\n

Registration for Tapestry: A Day for You will open Friday, February 20, at 8 a.m. Tickets are $65 per person for open seating or $700 for a table of ten. Corporate tables are also available for $1,000. Tickets will be available online at ipfw.edu\/tapestry.<\/p>\n

This year’s Tapestry will feature a keynote session by renowned journalist and author Jane Pauley. She is a contributor to CBS News’ Sunday Morning and a bestselling author. Pauley was a co-host of NBC’s Today for 13 years, anchored Dateline NBC for more than a decade, and hosted The Jane Pauley Show. An advocate for children’s health and education, she is also a spokesperson for mental health. A native Hoosier, Pauley has inspired professional women everywhere.<\/p>\n

Fourteen morning workshops will give attendees the chance discuss and explore cooking, design, and a host of other women’s interests and issues. The sessions will be at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Workshop sponsors include Parkview Health, IPFW, Woman’s Health Advantage, and many others.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

About Dorothy Kittaka<\/strong><\/p>\n

Her journey began during one of the darkest times in American history. When she was just two years old, Kittaka and her family were among more than 120,000 other Japanese-Americans sent to American internment camps during the height of the Second World War. It was in a camp that Kittaka experienced her very first memory of music from a lone, soulful trumpet player. This moment of providence would stay with her all her life, compelling her to devote her life to music.<\/p>\n

She has been widely recognized for her accomplishments. Kittaka was inducted into the National Music Teachers Hall of Fame in 1999, a finalist for the Indiana Teacher of the Year Award in 1997, and received the Indiana Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year Award from the Indiana Music Educators Association in 1991. She is a recipient of the Fulbright Memorial Teachers Fund Grant and the Arts United Lifetime Achievement Award, among many other accolades.<\/p>\n

Kittaka co-founded the Foundation for Art and Music in Education (FAME), a professional organization of art, music, dance, and drama educators that fosters and encourages an appreciation for the arts in elementary-age children throughout northern Indiana. She also co-founded the Cherry Blossom Festival in Fort Wayne. Kittaka has sung in operas with the IPFW Opera Workshop and as part of the chorus for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony, in addition to being a soprano soloist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic.<\/p>\n

About Tapestry: A Day for You<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tapestry is a day of inspiration, renewal, and education for women in all stages of life while also raising scholarship funds for those studying health sciences at IPFW. In the past thirteen years, nearly $675,000 has been raised, the Tapestry Parkview Endowment has grown to over $530,000, and 50 students have received scholarships to study health sciences at IPFW.<\/p>\n

It began in 2002 as a way to enrich the lives of women in northeast Indiana and to raise funds for students studying in the College of Health and Human Services at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW). Parkview Health shared this vision by joining forces with IPFW as the founding sponsors. Together, with the support of additional sponsors and the women of Indiana, IPFW and Parkview have grown the event to encompass a full day of inspiration, renewal, and education for women in all stages of life.<\/p>\n
