Explore the Art and Food of Italy this Summer<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
(February 13, 2015) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne offers a variety of short, educational travel opportunities each year. These programs are developed and led by IPFW faculty and vary according to their research and schedule. This upcoming summer, two trips to Italy are being marketed to community members as educational travel. This is advantageous for individuals wanting guided travel and a deep learning experience from experts. IPFW students can also take these course for college credit.<\/p>\n

Culinary Traditions of Tuscany, May 23 – June 7<\/strong>
\nThe first trip, Culinary Traditions of Tuscany, will travel May 23 – June 7, 2015, hosted by IPFW Consumer and Family Sciences. Focusing on the intriguing food culture of Italy, travelers will see, feel, taste and explore the real foods. IPFW works with a small local Italian company to offer unique experiences not available to the average traveler to Italy. The IPFW student and community travelers alike highly recommend this trip. “Each and every day was a different window into the cuisine of this beautiful country, says Community Traveler Martha Coussement of her 2011 experience. “What I learned on this trip opened my eyes to a greater understanding of the world and our industry,” says Hospitality Management Student Brittney Egolf of her 2013 trip.<\/p>\nThe group will travel to Florence to begin their Italian adventure. After exploring the rich Florentine cuisine, they will travel to the primary base of study, Sansepolcro. This picturesque Renaissance town sits in the center of Italy, on the border between Tuscany and Umbria). It is large enough to offer substantial opportunities in the region to meet needs, yet small enough and far enough away from main tourism attractions to remain genuine.<\/p>\n
Extraordinary activities planned including a day with a truffle hunter and his trusted dog, walking in the Apennine Mountains to look for and talk about this rare gift of nature. Excursions to ancient hill towns & villages will be taken, as travelers explore foods of the region. A cooking class with an Award Winning Chef is planned; a day beginning at the market with the chef followed by an afternoon cooking class based on seasonal classic dishes such as bringoli, salsiccia alla brace, and panzanella. A visit to wine estates to gain appreciation of the art of wine making from the vineyard to the enoteca is arranged. A meeting with a shepherd and his goats as the travelers discover the secrets of making cheese. They will also learn to make artisan bread, pizza, pasta, gnocchi, olive oil, sausages, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, and so much more.<\/p>\n

Art of Italy, June 7 – 28<\/strong>
\nThe second trip to Italy, hosted by the IPFW Department of Fine Arts, is called The Art of Italy. It will travel from June 7- 28, 2015. After flying from Chicago to Rome, travelers will tour the city that is home to such wonders as the Colosseum and Forum, the Vatican Museum with its Sistine Chapel, and the Borghese Palace, full of beautiful sculptures by Bernini and paintings by Caravaggio. They will then train to Venice, one of the most unique cities in the world and a United Nations Education, Science, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site. While there, tours of the Doge’s Palace and the Academia Museum which house paintings by such masters as Veronese and Giorgione will be taken.<\/p>\nA trip from Venice to Padua to view the ground breaking frescos of the artist Giotto in the Arena Chapel as well as visit the pilgrimage church of Saint Anthony is scheduled. Lastly, while residing in Florence, travelers will understand why this city was the epicenter of the Italian Renaissance. Visits there will include the Uffizi Museum with paintings such as Botticelli’s Birth of Venus, the Academia Museum with Michelangelo’s David, and the impressive Pitti Palace and Gardens. While in Florence the group will travel to the towns of Pisa to visit its Campanile or \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcLeaning Tower’, and Siena, one of the most authentic medieval towns in Europe. This is guaranteed to be an amazing art adventure.<\/p>\n

Prices and deposit deadlines<\/strong>
\nIncluded in the cost of these trips are round trip airfare from Chicago, lodging, most meals, ground transportation, travel health insurance, and planned activities and events. The cost of the Culinary Traditions of Tuscany trip for a student is $4380 ($5174.85 with tuition) and for a non-credit traveler it is $4730. The cost of the Art of Italy trip for a student is $5400 ($6195 with tuition) and for a non-credit traveler it is $5750.<\/p>\nA $500 deposit is due by March 4 to reserve your spot on one of these trips.
