Have you ever wondered who goes to public meetings, who votes, and who runs for office? How decisions are made about what to put in a news story or on a blog? What it’s like to run for office? How to communicate effectively in the public arena? What the connection is between politics and community activism? Why it’s so hard to make government work effectively? Then the Mike Downs Center for Indiana Politics at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and the Bowen Center for Public Affairs at Ball State University (BSU) have just the thing for you.<\/p>\n

A workshop, “Political Participation: Who, What, Why, and How?” will be held Saturday, May 16, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 222 of the Walb Student Union on the IPFW campus. The cost of the workshop is $35 per person and includes breakfast and lunch.<\/p>\n

Speakers include Sally Jo Vasicko, co-director of the Bowen Center; Andrew Downs, director of the Downs Center; Michael Wolf, associate professor of political science at IPFW; Rebecca Gallagher, associate faculty in communication at IPFW; Jonathan Tankel, associate professor of communication at IPFW; and John Stafford, director of the Community Research Institute at IPFW. Panel discussions after lunch will highlight “Covering Government,” “Running for Office,” and “Citizens as Activists.”<\/p>\n
