Fort Wayne Celebrates Bird Town Indiana Designation<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(September 10, 2014) \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll joined Audubon Society Vice President Jeff Canada, Audubon Society Member Dave Fox, Little River Wetlands Project Education Coordinator Liz Hincks, Bob Walton from Soarin’ Hawk Raptor Rehab, and children from Franke Park Elementary School to celebrate Fort Wayne’s designation as the fifth Bird Town Indiana by the Indiana Audubon Society.<\/p>\n

“Bird Town Indiana” is a designation awarded by the Indiana Audubon Society to those communities in Indiana that demonstrate an active and ongoing commitment to the protection and conservation of bird populations and habitat. <\/p>\n

“We’d like to thank Dave Fox and Jeff Canada from the Audubon Society for making the application process for this designation so simple,” said Parks & Recreation Director Al Moll. “We plan to offer more birding programs in the future, and invite birders from all over the world to visit our parks.”<\/p>\n

Along with the Fort Wayne Parks & Recreation Department, the Allen County Parks Department, ACRES Land Trust and Little River Wetlands Project all contributed to achieving this designation due to their efforts to preserve and restore wildlife habitats in the Fort Wayne area. Each organization also provides educational programs to citizens and schools about nature and preservation.<\/p>\n

The Department will post Bird Town Indiana signs in parks most known for their walking trails, to make bird watching more convenient: Franke, Salomon, Kreager, Buckner, and Lindenwood Nature Preserve. <\/p>\n

The Parks & Recreation Department offered a new program in July to encourage bird watching in Lindenwood Nature Preserve, where all forms of wildlife is abundant: Dan Klopfenstein, a friend of the Stockbridge Audubon Society and longtime bird enthusiast, presented an introductory course in woodland bird identification. On Saturday, October 25, at 1 pm, Soarin Hawk Raptor Rehab will bring live birds for a 45-minute educational program to Lindenwood. This will be during Lindenwood’s Open House: Food, Fire, Hike & Raptors, which begins at 10 am that day and runs until 5 pm. The program is free, but free will donations are encouraged and will benefit Soarin’ Hawk’s work. For more information about this program, contact Amy at 427-6005. <\/p>\n
