Subject<\/strong>: Male \/ Age 49<\/p>\n

On Sunday, 08\/24\/2014, at approximately 5:16 AM, FWPD responded to an apartment in the 900 block of East Cook Road (Orchard Place Apartments) reference a subject breaking out the windows of his apartment. Responding officers arrived on scene and heard what appeared to be gunshots being fired from inside the apartment. Officers indicated it appeared the subject was shooting a firearm out of one of the broken windows. Dispatch spoke with the subject on the telephone and he advised he was having suicidal thoughts. After repeated requests, the subject refused to exit his apartment and speak with officers. At approximately 5:49 AM, the Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist reference a barricaded suicidal subject that was possibly armed with a firearm. <\/p>\n

A CRT negotiator established communication with the subject via telephone. The negotiator maintained telephone communication with the subject for several hours attempting to encourage him to exit the apartment. The subject finally agreed to a surrender plan and agreed to voluntarily exit the apartment. At approximately 8:30 AM, the subject exited the apartment. He complied with verbal commands from the Emergency Services Team members and was detained without incident. The subject did not incur any injuries as a result of the incident. The Emergency Services Team cleared the interior of the apartment and did not locate and additional subjects inside. The subject was transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. It has not been determined if any firearms were found inside the apartment. <\/p>\n

Nearby neighbors were evacuated from their apartments for their safety during the three hour investigation. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department. There are no additional details at this time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
