Padres’ First-Rounder Turner Debuts with TinCaps<\/strong>

<\/p>\n

(July 14, 2014) – Trea Turner, the 13th overall pick by the San Diego Padres in this June’s first-year player draft, made his Fort Wayne TinCaps debut yesterday against the South Bend Silver Hawks. He becomes the 28th first-round or supplemental first-round selection of the Padres to play in Fort Wayne since the two clubs began their affiliation in 1999.<\/p>\n

Turner, 22, played shortstop and went 1-for-5 with a single, a run scored, and stole two bases. The Lake Worth, Florida, native began his pro career on June 16th with the Short-Season Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League. While playing with the Oregon-based club, he hit .228 with one home run and two runs batted in, and stole nine bases in 10 tries over 23 games.<\/p>\n

This past season at North Carolina State, Turner won the Brooks Wallace Award, now given annually to the nation’s top collegiate shortstop. Past winners include former TinCap and current Padre Jedd Gyorko, Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, and David Price of the Tampa Bay Rays. Over his three-year career with the Wolfpack, Turner stole 117 bases, the fourth most in Atlantic Coast Conference history, and he set a school record for stolen bases in a single season with 57, which led the NCAA in 2012. <\/p>\n

The last 11 Padres first-round or supplemental first-round picks to have signed with the organization have been sent to Fort Wayne. Turner joins a list of notable first-round or supplemental first-round picks to play for the TinCaps, which includes Cory Spangenberg (2011), Jaff Decker (2009), Cory Luebke (2007, 2008), and Travis Jankowski (2012), Joe Ross (2012, 2013 and Jace Peterson (2012) who made his MLB debut with the Padres earlier this season.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
