Under the Dome of High Pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Temperatures are sizzling across the Plains while that part of the U.S. remains under a “dome” of high pressure. While not an impenetrable bubble that severs all contact with the outside world, a heat dome<\/em> does “trap” hot air underneath it over the course of several days, often over a large area.<\/p>\n

Here’s why: when a sprawling area of high pressure develops in the mid to upper atmosphere, the air beneath it slowly sinks and warms as it is compressed. As a result, temperatures steadily heat up near the surface (especially in the summer when the sun angle is high and if there are few clouds).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
