{"id":38494,"date":"2013-08-24T20:00:14","date_gmt":"2013-08-25T00:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/?p=38494"},"modified":"2020-12-26T17:59:23","modified_gmt":"2020-12-26T22:59:23","slug":"september-is-national-preparedness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2013\/08\/24\/september-is-national-preparedness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"September is National Preparedness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"American Red Cross logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/icons\/ARed_Cross.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>News release from the American Red Cross:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>National Preparedness Month<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Blood donations an important part of being prepared<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>(August 20, 2013) &#8211; September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross encourages individuals to take action to plan and prepare for an emergency and to donate blood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Disasters can strike at any time and being prepared is a family&#8217;s and an individual&#8217;s best defense,&#8221; said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for Indiana-Ohio Region and Western Lake Erie Region Blood Services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Supporting Red Cross blood donation or giving blood is also critical to community preparedness since hospitals need blood to respond to patient need,&#8221; Whitman said. &#8220;The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Red Cross recommends three simple actions to prepare for weather-related disaster events and emergencies such as a house fire: get a kit, make a plan and be informed. &#8220;Everyone needs to have a plan; waiting until disaster strikes is too late,&#8221; Whitman added.<\/p>\n<p>All blood types are needed daily, but type O negative, as the universal blood type, is frequently in high demand.<\/p>\n<p>More information including smart phone apps, tools and a family disaster plan template are available at the Red Cross website at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/national-preparedness-month.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/www.redcross.org\/get-help\/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies\/national-preparedness-month.html<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Residents have the opportunity to donate at these local blood drives<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tuesday, Sept. 3, from 1 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at Fed Ex Express, located at 3620 Independence Drive in Fort Wayne. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver&#8217;s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
