Parkview brings record-length scarf supporting breast cancer to Fort Wayne<\/strong><\/p>\n

(August 22, 2013) – At a length of 5,996 feet, a record-length pink scarf is in Fort Wayne and will be on display at various locations through September 12, 2013. Parkview Health and Francine’s Friends have teamed up to bring the scarf to the NE Indiana region.<\/p>\n

Cindy Whitlock and Dana Treadway created Terri’s Tribute as homage to Terri Lynne Massey, who passed away at the age of 39 from breast cancer. In addition to the record-length scarf, Terri’s Tribute includes a college scholarship for a young adult entering college who has lost a parent to breast cancer.<\/p>\n

“The scarf raises awareness about breast cancer, who it takes and who is saved. It pieces\u00c2\u00a0together the stories of love, loss and hope created by breast cancer in so many lives,” said Cindy Whitlock, creator of Terri’s Tribute. “Terri’s Tribute started at Terri’s funeral. We know we can’t cure cancer, but\u00c2\u00a0we can make sure her kids, and other kids who have lost moms to breast cancer, get to go to college.”<\/p>\n

Terri’s Tribute recently awarded their first scholarship to a young man who lost his mom to breast cancer. Terri’s oldest daughter, Jamie, who is battling leukemia, will receive the second scholarship in May 2014.<\/p>\n

“Raising awareness for breast cancer is the key to catching it early and giving patients the best chance to beat this potentially deadly disease,” said Rae Gonterman, senior vice president, Cancer Services. “When we learned of Terri’s Tribute and the pink scarf, we immediately picked up the phone to see how we could get involved and help spread the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcpink ribbon’ message.”<\/p>\n

Locally, anyone who can knit or crochet is encouraged to contribute to the scarf if they would like to. All new, locally created pieces will be measured and counted to the overall length. Instead of being sent back to West Virginia, where Terri’s Tribute began, the pieces will be knit into blankets for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients at Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center.<\/p>\n

Finished scarf sections must be no more than 7 inches wide, or 5 feet long. They can be mailed to Parkview Comprehensive Cancer Center, 11141 Parkview Plaza Drive, Suite 110, Fort Wayne, IN 46845.<\/p>\n
