{"id":371,"date":"2008-03-17T20:28:37","date_gmt":"2008-03-18T00:28:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/?p=371"},"modified":"2020-12-24T14:23:25","modified_gmt":"2020-12-24T19:23:25","slug":"harrison-square-painting-contract-deferred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/03\/17\/harrison-square-painting-contract-deferred\/","title":{"rendered":"Harrison Square Painting Contract Deferred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At today&#8217;s regular meeting of the Redevelopment Commission, the approval of the painting contract for the ballpark was deferred.\u00c2\u00a0 Thomarios was the sole respondent for\u00c2\u00a0the painting contract.\u00c2\u00a0 It was asked if there was a reason for\u00c2\u00a0receiving only one bid and there were two answers given.\u00c2\u00a0 Some\u00c2\u00a0local contractors were frustrated at how the documents regarding the bid were released.\u00c2\u00a0 The second answer was that demand in the local market is so great right now, that most local contractors aren&#8217;t looking for work.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was then stated that due to some information received earlier in the day, the commission was being asked to defer approval of the contract until some things could be checked out,\u00c2\u00a0mainly\u00c2\u00a0Thomarios safety-related concerns (<strong>AFW previous post<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/03\/15\/painting-bids-for-harrison-square\/\">Harrison Square Paint Bid Concerns<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 There is time to check the bid a little closer and gain assurances from Thomarios regarding the safety concerns.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;We don&#8217;t think they do [have the safety-issues] , but we want to check out safety related concerns,&#8221; stated Greg Leatherman, Executive Director of the Redevelopment Department.\u00c2\u00a0 He went on to state that safety of employees is very important to the City and Weigand especially.\u00c2\u00a0 Specifics weren&#8217;t given to the Commissioners\u00c2\u00a0during the public meeting.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It was also stated that Thomarios is a pretty big outfit and has completed some huge projects.\u00c2\u00a0 The bid Thomarios submitted was considerably lower than the engineer&#8217;s estimate which will also be checked out.\u00c2\u00a0 Putting off approval of this particular contract will not hold up any other portion of the project.\u00c2\u00a0 One of the Commissioners asked if the concerns were enough to reject the bid which would then cause the contract to be re-bid.\u00c2\u00a0 Redevelopment Commission Attorney John Wernet answered that, &#8220;It would be a push to reject for the concerns had.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I spoke with Greg Leatherman shortly before the meeting began and asked if Redevelopment usually\u00c2\u00a0checks out-of-town contractors before awarding bids.\u00c2\u00a0 He stated that it depends.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Unless the component\u00c2\u00a0is really important to the overall design of a project, they probably do not\u00c2\u00a0check.\u00c2\u00a0 In a way this makes sense, but in this instance, something as quick as a &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google<\/a>&#8221; of the company name turned up several links to articles containing the information posted earlier on this blog.<\/p>\n<h3>Related Images:<\/h3><div class=\"ngg-related-gallery\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/fw-redevelopment\/70496.jpg\"\n\t\t\ttitle=\"Jim Irwin, Barry Real Estate, leads a tour of Redevelopment Authority and Commission members around the Parkview Field.
