History Center’s March programs focus on Civil War and Women’s History Month<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

March programming at the History Center in Fort Wayne kicks off on Sunday, March 3 with the George R. Mather Lecture at 2 p.m. featuring Scott Bushnell.<\/p>\n

Bushnell will speak on “Isaac Jenkinson: Warrior in Ink”. The lecture is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

According to Bushnell, “Some of the bitterest battles in the Civil War occurred not on the battlefield, but in the town meeting hall. This was particularly true in Indiana, where there were significant differences of opinion about slavery, the right for states to secede from the Union and the appropriate role of the federal government.”<\/p>\n

Jenkinson was a newspaper editor and staunch Abraham Lincoln supporter. He was also an imposing orator of the period, says Bushnell, and “his knowledge of history and unwillingness to tolerate fatuous political positions are evident throughout the speech.<\/p>\n

“It is an opportunity to hear what were the bitter political differences between the two sides in the war and how they were presented to the people. Jenkinson’s \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcThe Peace Party and Its Policy’ speech also provides an away-from-the-battlefield perspective on what motivated both sides in the Civil War.”<\/p>\n

Bushnell is the author of “Hard News, Heartfelt Opinions: A History for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette” (Indiana University Press) and “Historic Photographs of Fort Wayne” (Turner Publishing).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m., the History Center and the Fort Wayne Area League of Women Voters will show the movie “Iron Jawed Angels” in celebration of Women’s History Month. The event is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

“Iron Jawed Angels” chronicles the years during World War I and after that led to the passage of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote.<\/p>\n

It is Well with My Soul and Zonta Club International of Fort Wayne will be in attendance that day to celebrate International Women’s Day and encourage women’s groups throughout the city to attend and distribute information about their work to improve the lives of women and children in the area.<\/p>\n
