TARP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/tFirst_Federal_Bank.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"97\" \/>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/tFirst_Defiance.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have to wonder if that wasn&#8217;t the Homer Simpson-like sounds coming from the countless board rooms of banks and financial institutions across this country when they first learned of the\u00c2\u00a0Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. \u00c2\u00a0Especially with the recent wave of stories in the media about the lack of oversight this program has received. \u00c2\u00a0So let me throw out my opinion. \u00c2\u00a0Well, brace yourselves. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m going to give you another one of my opinions\/rants. \u00c2\u00a0Bear with me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I blogged about Wells Fargo giving the City of Fort Wayne $15,000 towards the\u00c2\u00a0Green Business Outreach Program while receiving $25 million in TARP funds. \u00c2\u00a0While looking through the TARP information\u00c2\u00a0(towards the top of page 3) on the web, I discovered that First Defiance Financial Corp. was given $37 million in exchange for preferred stock\/warrants. \u00c2\u00a0A quick google of the bank&#8217;s name revealed one of its subsidiaries is First Federal Bank. \u00c2\u00a0This was the bank of my grandfathers and probably my mom and dad have\/had some dealings with this bank as well. \u00c2\u00a0I still remember entering the lobby of their headquarters on Clinton Street in the 70s and being told to mind my manners as we were on &#8220;official&#8221; business.<\/p>\n<p>Today, while checking my RSS feeds on google, I ran across <a href=\"https:\/\/chamberdailydose.blogspot.com\/2008\/01\/get-ccd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post from the Chamber of Commerce<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0It seems that First Federal Bank, among other businesses, is sponsoring a networking event with the Chamber of Commerce. \u00c2\u00a0To be honest, I&#8217;m sure this can&#8217;t be that much of an outlay for First Federal, and I&#8217;m also sure this was probably planned long before TARP was thought of. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, that&#8217;s not the point. \u00c2\u00a0Why are these institutions that have received TARP funds allowed to spend it on such things as a networking event, community outreach, helping a government entity find energy savings or even advertising? \u00c2\u00a0(I&#8217;ll admit that energy savings one might have <em>some <\/em>merit.) \u00c2\u00a0Shouldn&#8217;t these banks be required to cut back on their advertising\/outreach\/charitable contributions? \u00c2\u00a0I can understand if an institution is underwriting the electric and or food bills of say, a homeless shelter, but this is really ridiculous.<\/p>\n<p>Where does it end, you ask? \u00c2\u00a0Hopefully with our new President who takes office next Tuesday. \u00c2\u00a0I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if we don&#8217;t see some action out of him within hours of the <a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2009\/01\/14\/fort-wayne-inauguration-day-activities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Inauguration<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Related Images:<\/h3><div class=\"ngg-related-gallery\">\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/cityoffw\/71709.jpg\"\n\t\t\ttitle=\"Mayor Tom Henry announces call for referendum vote on the gaming issue during a press conference on February 27, 2009.\"\n\t\t\tclass='thickbox' rel='52fd68ed7f488e2237705a31c3a569ee' data-image-id=\"199\" data-src=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/cityoffw\/71709.jpg\" data-thumbnail=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/cityoffw\/thumbs\/thumbs_71709.jpg\" data-title=\"2009\/02\/27: Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry\" data-description=\"Mayor Tom Henry announces call for referendum vote on the gaming issue during a press conference on February 27, 2009.\">\n\t\t\t<img title=\"2009\/02\/27: Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry\"\n\t\t\t\talt=\"2009\/02\/27: Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry\"\n\t\t\t\tdata-image-id=\"199\"\n\t\t\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/cityoffw\/thumbs\/thumbs_71709.jpg\"\/>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/gallery\/cityoffw\/71710.jpg\"\n\t\t\ttitle=\"Mayor Tom Henry shakes hands with Allen County Councilman Paul Moss after the press conference announcing his decision to seek a referendum vote on the gaming issue.
