{"id":2494,"date":"2009-01-05T20:59:50","date_gmt":"2009-01-06T01:59:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/?p=2494"},"modified":"2020-12-25T19:25:59","modified_gmt":"2020-12-26T00:25:59","slug":"city-council-meeting-tomorrow-162009-reorganization-president-bender","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2009\/01\/05\/city-council-meeting-tomorrow-162009-reorganization-president-bender\/","title":{"rendered":"City Council meeting tomorrow, 1\/6\/2009; Reorganization; President Bender?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/icons\/t_City_Council.jpg\" alt=\"The Fort Wayne City Council\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The Fort Wayne City Council meets tomorrow at 5:30 pm in the City Council Chambers for the first time in 2009. \u00c2\u00a0The majority of the meeting will be concerned with reorganization issues. \u00c2\u00a0The agenda for tomorrow&#8217;s meeting has not been released &#8211; because, I was told by City Clerk Sandy Kennedy earlier today, the Council President hasn&#8217;t been decided yet nor the other committee appointments. \u00c2\u00a0Besides, there is only one ordinance on the agenda, the amnesty for past due parking tickets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"Council Vice-President Tom Smith presents Council President Tom Didier with a plaque commemorating his first year as Council President.\" rel=\"lightbox[Did1216]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/67602.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/t67602.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">One of the most important things to happen tomorrow night, will be the election of the new Council President. \u00c2\u00a0I don&#8217;t think, and this is my thought, that current President Tom Didier will be in the running. \u00c2\u00a0I can imagine that the time demands the position created were more than Tom first imagined. \u00c2\u00a0It is a highly visible position and can be one of considerable power, even though some feel it is not. \u00c2\u00a0I think it depends on the individual and not the office. \u00c2\u00a0While I have enormous respect for Tom, this position, especially with this Council, demands someone with a firm hand who will control the proceedings efficiently, yet at times be\u00c2\u00a0unapologetic. \u00c2\u00a0I remember thinking during the last meeting of 2008, when <a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/12\/16\/city-council-revealed-patriotic-moments\/\">Tom was singing the National Anthem<\/a>, that it was his Swan Song.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/icons\/Smith_Tom.jpg\" alt=\"City Councilman Tom Smith. Photo from the City of Fort Wayne website.\" align=\"center\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">My thinking is that with a 5-4 Republican majority, a Republican will be selected as the next Council President. \u00c2\u00a0Councilman Tom Smith has held the position previously and in fact, is the current Vice-President. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;ve gotten the sense from Tom that he is not pursuing it, although \u00c2\u00a0I don&#8217;t think he would turn it down either. \u00c2\u00a0He would definitely keep the meetings on task. \u00c2\u00a0Councilwoman Liz Brown and Councilman Mitch Harper are both in their second year on the Council. \u00c2\u00a0I don&#8217;t think Liz will be considered, simply because she is so direct and not always diplomatic. \u00c2\u00a0That&#8217;s not necessarily a bad quality to have, however, at times this has become counter-productive to her. \u00c2\u00a0She was one of the driving forces behind the Council&#8217;s budget cuts late last year which will lessen the impact of falling tax revenues in the coming years. \u00c2\u00a0Often, I totally agree with Liz on point, but it&#8217;s her presentation that tends to derail any action. \u00c2\u00a0Councilman Harper certainly has the knowledge, ability and acumen for the position, but it was mentioned in the <span class=\"removed_link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.journalgazette.net\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20090104\/LOCAL0202\/901040452\">Journal Gazette<\/span> that he is not expecting to be offered the position.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">So who does that leave?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/icons\/Bender_Marty.jpg\" alt=\"Councilman Marty Bender (R-At-Large).
