Liddell will be merging with another company which will bring a casino to Fort Wayne. \u00c2\u00a0The company being merged with is\u00c2\u00a0Exit Only Inc., and is, &#8220;Currently established in Canada, Text4cars is planning an expansion into US markets over the coming months.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0This according to it&#8217;s website. \u00c2\u00a0The press release, at the bottom of this post, states that the, &#8220;&#8230;goal is to revitalize the downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana area and provide financial support for the city.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Mr. Liddell also owns Piere&#8217;s which is on the Northeast side of Fort Wayne near Canterbury Green. \u00c2\u00a0As you may know, the possibility of a casino coming to Fort Wayne has been discussed as early as January by then newly-taken office Mayor Tom Henry. \u00c2\u00a0Only days into office, he talked about the possibility of moving one of the state&#8217;s gambling licenses to this region. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During the recent City Council Budget Hearings, <a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/10\/29\/casino-in-the-fort\/\">Councilman Mitch Harper asked Deputy Mayor Greg Purcell<\/a> about the possibility of a casino coming to town. \u00c2\u00a0He responded that it was still being explored, but not to count on it to ease the City&#8217;s potential budget woes when House Bill 1001&#8217;s effect kicks in.<\/p>\n<p>A recent poll was conducted by the News-Sentinel\/WANE-TV. \u00c2\u00a0The question was asked, &#8220;Would you favor or oppose a gaming boat in Fort Wayne as a part of the often discussed North River Project?&#8221;<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"1\" cellpadding=\"10\" align=\"center\">\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<th align=\"center\">Grouping<\/th>\n<th align=\"center\">Favor<\/th>\n<th align=\"center\">Oppose<\/th>\n<th align=\"center\">Not Sure<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\"><strong>All<\/strong><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><strong>32%<\/strong><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><strong>36%<\/strong><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\"><strong>32%<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Men<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">35%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">34%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">31%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Women<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">29%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">38%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">33%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Democrats<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">32%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">35%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">33%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Republicans<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">34%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">34%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">32%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\">Independents<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">30%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">39%<\/td>\n<td align=\"center\">31%<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>A follow up question was, &#8220;Should it be done by a regional development authority to support regional infrastructure and economic development?&#8221; (Only asked among the 32% who responded in favor). The response here was 42% in favor, 18% against and 40% not sure.<\/p>\n<p>Another follow up question asked of those who responded favorably was, &#8220;Should it be done by Fort Wayne to support community development?&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0Yes &#8211; 45%, No &#8211; 17%, Not sure &#8211; 38%. \u00c2\u00a0This was really the only question asked that had any value or validity. \u00c2\u00a0Click here to view the\u00c2\u00a0News-Sentinel\/WANE-TV poll.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve already expressed my thinking about the flawed first question, thus my own straw poll, albeit an unscientific one at that:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">[poll id=&#8221;27&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>So, community support could go either way at this point. \u00c2\u00a0Personally, I think religious\/moral issues will play into this and if it comes to a referendum vote, it probably wouldn&#8217;t pass &#8211; it would be close, but in the end wouldn&#8217;t fly.<\/p>\n<p>Another question: Is this the direction we want economic development to go in this community? \u00c2\u00a0This is the view many on the City Council will be quick to embrace or deny.<\/p>\n<p>And finally, will the City of Fort Wayne grant a tax abatement for the project if requested? \u00c2\u00a0Under the current City and State Statutes, there would be no legal grounds for denying such a request. \u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other question is if this will be located downtown, where? \u00c2\u00a0Are they going to purchase the OmniSource property? \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s about the only large-sized parcel left downtown that could possibly house such a project.<\/p>\n<p>In Anderson Indiana, 14 years ago, they constructed the infrastructure for the horse track that was built there. \u00c2\u00a0For the recent casino, however, no incentives were given. \u00c2\u00a0The City of Anderson owned the land the casino was built on which was purchased by the casino. \u00c2\u00a0Linda Dawson,\u00c2\u00a0Executive Director for the\u00c2\u00a0City of Anderson Economic &amp; Community Development, told me in an email that, &#8220;Casinos are such huge money making businesses. \u00c2\u00a0It is hard to justify offering taxpayer funded incentives.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0It&#8217;s this feeling that should stick in our throats when considering such an offering locally.<\/p>\n<p>The Press Release announcing the merger and possibly Fort Wayne Casino plans:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>SOURCE: Exit Only Inc. &#8211; <em>Nov 25, 2008 08:02 ET<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Exit Only Inc.
