Governor Mitch Daniels to Open IPFW 2011-2012 Omnibus Lecture Series<\/strong><\/p>\n

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne’s (IPFW) Omnibus Lecture Series, in its 17th year, celebrates 100 lectures dedicated to presenting diverse ideas and respected speakers to northeast Indiana.<\/p>\n

Mitch Daniels, governor of Indiana, will open the 2011-2012 season on Wednesday, September 28, in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center, at 7 p.m. (This lecture is scheduled 30 minutes earlier than all other Omnibus lectures.) His presentation, “Keeping the Republic: Saving America by Trusting Americans”, is also the title of his newly released book. Free tickets are required for this lecture, and must be picked up in person at the Schatzlein Box Office in the lobby of the Rhinehart Music Center, Monday through Friday, 12:30-6:30 p.m., beginning September 7.<\/p>\n

Please note<\/strong>: Governor Daniels’ availability was limited to September 28. We are privileged to have him visit IPFW as he begins his new book tour, but we apologize if this date conflicts with the religious obligations of our audience. The Governor’s lecture will be
\nrebroadcast on PBS 39HD on Sunday, October 2, at 2 p.m., and on WBOI 89.1 FM on Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

A creative and visionary leader, called America’s Best Governor by Ross Douthat of the New York Times, Mitch Daniels has served as governor of Indiana since 2004. Previously, Governor Daniels enjoyed a successful career in business and government. His work as CEO of the Hudson Institute and president of Eli Lilly’s North American pharmaceutical operations prepared him for the business of running the state. He served as chief of staff to Senator Richard Lugar, senior advisor to President Ronald Reagan, and director of the Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush.<\/p>\n

On his first day in 2004, Daniels created the Office of Management and Budget. He led the state to its first balanced budget in eight years and, without a tax increase, transformed a $600 million deficit into an annual surplus. The governor also repaid hundreds of millions of dollars the state had borrowed from public schools, state universities, and local governments, and reduced the state’s overall debt by 40 percent. Today, Indiana has its first AAA credit rating and the fewest state employees per capita.<\/p>\n

Daniels created the public-private Indiana Economic Development Corporation, which broke records for new jobs and was associated with
\nmore than $18 billion of new investment. In 2008, Site Selection magazine and CNBC both named Indiana as the Most Improved State for
\nBusiness and it is now near the top of every national ranking of business attractiveness.<\/p>\n

Daniels was named Public Official of the Year by the independent magazine Governing and received the Herman Kahn Award. Daniels’
\ninnovations include the lease of the Indiana Toll Road, the Healthy Indiana Plan, and a sweeping property tax reform. He was presented the Conservation Leadership Award by Ducks Unlimited for his work in making Indiana a leader in public land conservation. Daniels is author of a new book, Keeping the Republic: Saving America by Trusting Americans.<\/p>\n

The Omnibus Lecture Series has been supported by the English Bonter Mitchell Foundation since 1995.<\/p>\n

The 2011-2012 Season media sponsors are WANE-TV NewsChannel 15 and Northeast Indiana Public Radio, along with PBS 39 for the Daniels’
\nLecture.<\/p>\n

All lectures require free tickets which will be available three weeks prior to each event at the box office in the Rhinehart Music Center. All lectures are held on the IPFW campus in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center’s 1,600-seat Auer Performance Hall. Doors open one hour before the each lecture. Campus parking is free and convenient. The new 1,000-space parking garage located in the Fine Arts Plaza will be open in mid-October to serve Omnibus audiences. Patrons are advised to allow ample time for traffic and parking, as the series and other events on campus may draw large crowds.<\/p>\n

The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center is located on the north end of campus in the arts plaza next to the Ernest E. Williams Theatre and the Visual Arts Building, and behind the Medical Education Center.<\/p>\n
