What’s Happening at the Botanical Conservatory in September<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

$1 Night<\/strong>: September 1, 5 – 8 pm
\nOn the first Thursday of the month we offer $1 admissions, 5-8 pm, for adults and children.
\nBabies and up to age 2 are still admitted free. Enjoy our evening hours and a special discount once a month. For more info, call (260) 427-6440.<\/p>\n

Botanical Roots Concert Series: Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience<\/strong>
\nFriday, September 2: Doors Open 7:30 pm \/ Opening Act 8:30 pm
\nFor nearly 30 years, Grammy-award-winning and 8th generation Louisiana Creole artist Terrance Simien has been shattering myths about his indigenous zydeco music. Leading his Zydeco Experience band, Simien has become one of the most respected and internationally recognized touring and recording artists in roots music today. He has performed over 6000 concerts, toured millions of miles to over 45 countries, and reached at least a million people during his eventful career that spans 3 decades.<\/p>\n

His musical roots are firmly planted alongside great zydeco pioneers like Chenier, Delafose, Chavis, Ardoin and that other Simien (Rockin Sidney) to name a few. He counts himself one of the fortunate few from the last generation with a direct link to these artists, some of whom mentored him as an emerging talent.<\/p>\n

Simien is blessed with extraordinary talent that expresses the deepest human emotions through the original instrument: the voice. He takes his audiences on a multicultural tour of the world as his music language has been informed by the many countries he has visited in his touring. He creates a hypnotic blend of New Orleans funk-reggae-flavored-Afro-Caribbean-world!<\/p>\n

Our final concert will be on the Terrace, rain or shine. Bring a lawn chair, buy dinner and drinks from Mad Anthony Brewing, and enjoy the evening al fresco. Admission is $6; free for ages 12 & under. No outside food or beverage is allowed.<\/p>\n

Fall Plant Swap<\/strong>: Saturday, September 3, 10 am – 11 am
\nDig up your extra plants, bring in those houseplants you’d like to share, and harvest your heirloom seeds for our free Fall Plant Swap. Divide your goodies into separate “servings” and label them before you come. You’ll get a number indicating the order of your turn, and we’ll take turns picking until all plants are claimed. Bring a box or bag to carry them home. The plant swap is free, but phone reservations are requested. To reserve a spot by September 2, leave a message at (260) 427-6442 with your name, phone, and number of participants. Held at the Botanical Conservatory, 1100 S. Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne.<\/p>\n

Art Exhibit: Elizabeth Balzer – Photography<\/strong>: September and October
\nArtist Reception: September 4, 1 – 3 pm
\nElizabeth is a Fort Wayne digital artist and gallery owner. She specializes in digitally manipulated photographs that are blended to create gateways into imaginal spaces. For many of her images she uses an infrared camera, which captures an otherworldly essence unseen by the naked eye. Her initial works were comprised mainly of trees and statues, but today her art also incorporates people, spiritual places, and illustrations. Regular Conservatory admission applies to see displays: $5\/adult, $3\/child age 3-17, free for children 2 and under. For info, call (260) 427-6440.<\/p>\n

Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown<\/strong>: Sunday, September 11, 12 – 5 pm
\nRediscover your own backyard Fort Wayne residents. With a Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown passport, you can visit area attractions and museums, including the Botanical Conservatory – for free! For the past decade, thousands of citizens have come out to explore the downtown and its many attractions, becoming ambassadors for Fort Wayne as they promote our tremendous resources and destinations. Fall Bonsai Display<\/strong>: Saturday, September 24, 10 am – 4 pm
\nExplore a forest of miniature trees carefully trained and pruned by members of our local bonsai club. Elms, maples, junipers and other familiar plants look just like their outdoor cousins – but a fraction of their size! We may be fortunate to see them in their autumn colors. The club also grows tropical bonsai that don’t need special winter treatment. Learn about this fascinating hobby. Bonsai pots and young plants will be available to purchase. Flower Power: The Summer of Love Exhibit<\/strong>

\nA wild riot of color and a symbol of the culture of the times, Flower Power: The Summer of Love features big, bold, bright, beautiful blooms. The 1960s were a decade of hope, fueled by a generation passionately dedicated to the belief that we had the ability to make the world a better place. The symbol of the decade was the flower; the flower stood for peace; peace still provides power for change. The centerpiece of this mod interpretation is a psychedelic Volkswagen microbus.
