Message of “Empowerment” from Former IPFW Professor<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(April 4, 2011) – As part of the at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Center for Women and Returning Adults’ (CWRA) Empowerment series, Isabel Molina-G\u00c3\u00bazman will speak about “From J.Lo to Sotomayor: Critical Reflections on Consuming the Latina Body.” \u00c2\u00a0The lecture is co-sponsored by the Communication and Media Society and Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association and will take place Tuesday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Walb Student Union Ballroom. It is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n

Molina-Guzm\u00c3\u00a1n, a former IPFW communications faculty member, is the chair and director of Latina\/Latino studies at the University of
\nIllinois. She is also an associate professor of media and cinema studies, Latina\/o studies, and gender and women studies. Her current book, Dangerous Curves: Latina Bodies in the Media, focuses on the contemporary popularity of iconic Latinas and Latina-themed media programming. Molina-Guzm\u00c3\u00a1n will explore the image of Latina women in the mass media. It will be available for purchase at the event.<\/p>\n

Molina-Guzm\u00c3\u00a1n is also the book reviews associate editor for the Journal of Communication, Culture and Critique. Her research and teaching\u00c2\u00a0strives to combine her academic interests with her professional experiences as a journalist and communications specialist.<\/p>\n
