News release from Ivy Tech Community College:<\/p>\n

Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast and Allen County Police Department Begin Curriculum for Police K9 Academy<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast and the Allen County Police Department announced today an agreement to offer a Career Development Certificate (CDC) that allows officers to receive college credit and college recognition for attending its Police K9 Academy. The intense 14-week K9 Academy includes an 80-hour classroom portion with the remainder devoted to physically intense fieldwork. The Academy covers diverse education topics that are required by law enforcement and directly apply to the criminal justice field.<\/p>\n

The State of Indiana provides basic and some advanced training through the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) and other Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board approved sites. Many other states in the country utilize community colleges to provide Police Officer Standards and Training.<\/p>\n

“Through the work of our Criminal Justice Program Chair John Grannan and partnership with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department Canine Training Division, we have been able to offer this relatively unique educational opportunity for officers,” said Russell D. Baker, vice chancellor for academic affairs. “We have been able to identify only one other arrangement like this that exists in the United States – at Fayetteville Technical Community College in Fayetteville, N.C.”<\/p>\n

Beneficiaries of the association include Indiana law enforcement officers who have been designated by their department chief or sheriff as potential canine officers and have contacted the Allen County Sheriff’s Department Canine Training Division to provide the training. In addition, training will be offered but not limited to in-state and out-of-state sheriff’s department, city\/town, and state police K9 teams.<\/p>\n

“This will be beneficial to all officers who are looking to expand upon their educational foundation,” said Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries.<\/p>\n
