{"id":1551,"date":"2008-10-05T18:45:54","date_gmt":"2008-10-05T22:45:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/?p=1551"},"modified":"2020-12-24T14:26:56","modified_gmt":"2020-12-24T19:26:56","slug":"another-downtown-demolition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/10\/05\/another-downtown-demolition\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Downtown Demolition?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a title=\"525 W Jefferson Boulevard - marked for demolition?\" rel=\"lightbox[525jeff]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/62982.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/t62982.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It looks like 525 W Jefferson Boulevard may be torn down shortly. \u00c2\u00a0This is the house immediately to the West of the downtown McDonald&#8217;s. \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0It appears that utilities have been cut to the house and a crane sits behind.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This two or three block area of Jefferson has undergone an amazing transformation with the addition of the Starbucks and renovation of the old Rogers\/Boxberger&#8217;s building into retail and Strebig Construction headquarters. \u00c2\u00a0There&#8217;s also been rumors of a new restaurant development at the corner of Broadway and Jefferson Boulevard, where the former Betty Brite Cleaners stands. \u00c2\u00a0Nothing substantial has been released yet plan-wise, however an <a href=\"https:\/\/aroundfortwayne.com\/news\/2008\/02\/13\/betty-brite-to-sell\/\">alley vacation<\/a> was granted for the property earlier this year by the Fort Wayne City Council.<\/p>\n<p>The two houses on the western side of 525 were saved and renovated a few years back. \u00c2\u00a0They became, Historic Jefferson Park and are beautiful testaments to what can be done instead of choosing the demolition option. \u00c2\u00a0The house in question does not look to be in that bad of condition, however, if a non-profit owns it now, there is probably little money available for any other option. \u00c2\u00a0Also, given the fact that their property on Berry Street is in good condition, this is probably the only option available to them. \u00c2\u00a0Too bad, it&#8217;s a shame!<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, a search of the on-line Allen County Property Card Records reveals this property was bought on June 25, 2007 by Cedars Hope, which according to it&#8217;s website, &#8220;&#8230;is a not-for-profit organization serving homeless persons living with a mental illness by offering permanent housing,&#8221; among other options. The shelter is on Berry Street, almost in a straight line from the house to be torn down. \u00c2\u00a0Before the sale in June, 2007, the property in question was owned by the\u00c2\u00a0Homeless Task Force of Fort Wayne, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Years ago, I worked for the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission. \u00c2\u00a0At that time, the Homeless Task Force was just getting started, but there wasn&#8217;t a written down organizational chart or anything like that. \u00c2\u00a0It was several agencies coming together to look at the various issues facing the homeless in Fort Wayne. \u00c2\u00a0I&#8217;m a bit curious about the entity listed as owning the property and how they came to possess it. \u00c2\u00a0It may not even be related.
