IPFW Workshop for New Immigrant\u00c2\u00a0Parents
\nSafety at Home, School, and Elsewhere<\/em><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(October 4, 2010) – Ensuring children’s safety at home and school is an issue for all American residents, regardless of ethnicity. But it can be particularly challenging to share such vital safety information with immigrants who are not familiar with the English language. The Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) New Immigrant Literacy Program will present a workshop for parents, “Safe Homes and Safe Schools,” Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Neff Hall, Room 333. It is free and open to the public. Child care will be available during the workshop.<\/p>\n

The workshop will include three speakers from the Fort Wayne community, as well as a Burmese translator:<\/p>\n

? Terri Jo Swim, Ph.D., associate professor in the IPFW School of Education, will present “Help Your Child be Safe at Home,” stressing Internet security for children, such as taking precautions with YouTube and Facebook.<\/p>\n

? Y. Craig Martin, director of the Fort Wayne Community Schools Student Services, will lead “Help Your Child be Safe at School,” with an emphasis on school bullies.<\/p>\n

? Michelle L. Savieo, Allen County local office director for the Indiana Department of Child Services, will round out the workshop with her presentation, “Help Your Child be Safe Everywhere,” and will discuss laws that are in place to protect children and the consequences for those who break them.<\/p>\n
