“Enlightened Sexism” Author to Speak at IPFW<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) Women’s Studies program will host Susan J. Douglas, nationally known author, talk show guest, and professor, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in The John and Ruth Rhinehart Music Center’s Rhinehart Recital Hall. A smart and witty cultural critic, Douglas deciphers the media’s impact on society through her presentation, “Enlightened Sexism: How the Media Took Us from Girl Power to Girls Gone Wild.”<\/p>\n

Douglas is the Neafie Kellogg Professor of Communication Studies and Department of Communication chair at The University of Michigan. Her books include The Mommy Myth: The Idealization of Motherhood and How It Undermines Women, Listening In: Radio and the American Imagination, and Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media. Where the Girls Are has been widely praised and was chosen one of the top ten
\nbooks of 1994 by National Public Radio, Entertainment Weekly, and The McLaughlin Group.<\/p>\n

Douglas has appeared on Today, the CBS Early Show, Oprah, and NPR’s Fresh Air, among other news and talk shows. Her column “Back Talk” appears monthly in In These Times.<\/p>\n

Douglas’s lecture caps off the second annual IPFW Women’s Studies One Book Program. The program encourages people from both inside and outside
\nthe university to read and participate in a community discussion of a book related to feminism. The 2010 Women’s Studies One Book is Douglas’s latest work, Enlightened Sexism: The Seductive Message that Feminism’s Work Is Done. Released in spring 2010, it is a follow up to Where the Girls Are and has received wide acclaim. The book chronicles the widening gap between the images of women in the mass media and the everyday lives of girls and women in the United States.<\/p>\n

Douglas’s presentation is sponsored by the IPFW Women’s Studies Program; the IPFW Departments of Communication, English and Linguistics, History, Philosophy, and Political Science; the IPFW Center for Women and Returning Adults; Community Friends of Women’s Studies; the Indiana-Purdue Student Government Association; and Women of the World.<\/p>\n
